A Very Blueberry Summer with Alison Sweeney

Blueberries

One of the things I buy the most at our local farmer’s market is berries. Strawberry, blueberries, raspberries, you name it, I love them. Since the season is fairly fleeting in the Northeast I buy as many as I can and preserve a whole bunch for winter. I also freeze a few bags worth, and then eat the rest! Last week I had the pleasure of interviewing Alison Sweeney about blueberries and how she incorporates them into her active lifestyle. I really like Alison and her positive, healthy message on behalf of her work with the U.S. Highbush Blueberry Council which is why I am sharing it with you today.

KB: Besides eating them as they are, how do you incorporate blueberries into your daily diet?

AS: My tried and true breakfast is oatmeal + blueberries + agave nectar + cinnamon. The blueberries are sweet and tangy, so it makes me feel like I’m having a treat, but it’s still healthy with only 80 calories in a cup of blueberries, plus  fiber and vitamin C. My kids always try to steal a bite like it’s a dessert!

KB: Do you ever cook with blueberries? If so, how?

AS: Absolutely! Blueberries on pizza! It’s unique, but really delicious. Also I’m a huge fan of these Blueberry Turkey Burgers! My kids love the tangy blueberry surprise, such a burst of flavor in the burger. Plus, you feel very “Master Chef” preparing them – blueberries are the secret ingredient!

KB: What other flavors do like to pair with blueberries?

AS: Lemon, of course! Blueberries also pair really well with banana, rosemary and lavender. On the savory side, feta and grilled red onion!

KB: I LOVE all of your ideas, thanks, Alison!!

Since a lot of us are also feeding hungry children I thought it would be cool to share this video where Alison suggests some great ideas for serving blueberries to children. She makes it sounds so easy and I think I might try a few with my daughter who has always been a little ho-hum about Little Blue Dynamos.

If you are inspired to have a very blueberry summer and need some fresh ideas for preparing blueberries be sure to check out Little Blue Dynamos on Facebook, Pinterest, and Twitter. There are so many fun facts and recipes ideas for the whole family.
