Exploring: Rochester, New York

Exploring Rochester New York | The Naptime ChefEvery summer we visit my brother, Uncle Will of Burgers and Chorizo Wraps fame, at his home in Rochester, New York. We love catching up with him and Sancho at their home and taking in the sites of the city. I’d never visited Rochester before he moved there and we’ve come to know it as a lovely city. There are lots of fun things to do with kids and we always have a nice time when we see him. If you are planning to visit Rochester here are a few things that are really fun to do while you are there!

The Museum of Play: This amazing children’s museum is all about child’s play. My kids adore it and we always spend hours exploring the Sesame Street room, the moving train, and the construction playground when we visit. Last year we went and there was even a butterfly room filled with hundreds of live rare butterflies. I can’t say enough about this place. It really is a must see when you travel to Rochester with kids.

Wegman’s: If you’ve never been to a Wegman’s you must, MUST go when you are there. I would happily trade in all of my neighborhood grocery stores for a Wegman’s. It has everything I like to buy: organic produce, freshly baked goods, kids supplies, and a line of private label foods that rivals Trader Joe’s. One of the Wegman’s stores in Rochester has it’s own restaurant called Amore. It features outstanding fresh pastas and woodfired pizza. Since it is attached to Wegman’s you can walk out of the restaurant straight into the store to pick up necessities before you head home!

The Rochester Museum & Science Center: We visited this for the first time this year and loved it. It has a little something for everyone. There is a climbing structure and rock wall for young kids and historic exhibitions for older folk. We also enjoyed the submarine simulator that took you to the bottom of Lake Ontario for a look at war time shipwrecks!

Abbot’s Frozen Custard: My brother knows how much we love ice cream and always takes us straight to Abbot’s Creamery when we arrive. It only features a few flavors each day and we love getting shakes and ice cream cones after every meal.

Roseland Water Park: This super fun park is a short drive from Rochester. My daughter had the best time going down the slides and jumping in the wave pool for the three hours we were there. I hung out with my little guy in the wading pool with the giant play apparatus. On a hot summer day this is a win-win for both the adults and kids.

Pittsford Farms Dairy: This really cool spot is like a snack bar and dairy bar all in one. Naturally we went for the ice cream (are you sensing a theme here?) and I would’ve gone back for the pies, milk, and more if we’d had more time. I highly recommend budgeting a lot of time for this stop. It is so charming you won’t want to leave!
